I’m thrilled today to announce the launch of our November Bumboo Giving Campaign. With your help, our goal is to donate 10,000 toilet rolls to food banks, local charities and other vital community projects around the UK, before Christmas.
2020 has been an incredibly challenging year for many of us, but it has hit some members of our communities much harder than others. Poverty levels in the UK were already on the rise pre-pandemic, but since the first lockdown, many more people have been pushed into the poverty trap, as demonstrated by the statistics below:
50% of people using foodbanks in the Trussell Trust network at the start of the pandemic had never needed to use one before. Families have been the hardest hit, accounting for nearly two in five households needing to use a food bank. (Source: https://www.trusselltrust.org/heriot-watt-research-2020/ )
Running a toilet roll business during a pandemic has given us a unique viewpoint of the situation, and the impact it has had on all of us. Never in our wildest imaginings could we have foreseen that the humble toilet roll would become such a highly valued essential, and symbol of the pandemic. We are very grateful that we’ve been able to continue our work throughout, and we don’t take this for granted for one second. We also very much recognise our responsibility to give back. When the UK went into crisis back in March and loo roll supplies were running low nationwide, we made sure that we got as much spare stock as we could get our hands on to local food banks and those in need. After running out completely in mid-March (except for stock ringfenced for our subscribers, who we always guarantee to hold stock for), we made sure to allocate some of the next stock delivery for the same purpose, supporting local foodbanks in South London (our office is based in Southwark) and collaborating with Sportsbanger and the amazing team of teachers and volunteers at Risley Primary School in Tottenham.
This work has been going on quietly in the background, but we know how much you love to help others too, and we have a platform to be able to facilitate this. We realised that it was time to ramp things up, share this opportunity with you, and invite you to increase our giving goals together!
So from now until the end of the month, we’ll be donating 4 toilet rolls for every 48 roll pack purchased, and 2 rolls for every 24 pack purchased, to those in need. This includes new and existing subscription purchases – so if you already have a subscription with us, you won’t miss out! If we don’t hit our 10k target by the end of the month, we’ll just keep going until we do 😊
In order to facilitate the distribution of a larger volume of toilet rolls, we’ve partnered with the fantastic team at In Kind Direct, and we will be supporting the Tottenham food bank directly once again, when it restarts at Christmas. Through In Kind Direct’s extensive distribution network, we will be able to reach a wide range of food banks, local charities and community projects around the UK. Our aim is to share some insights into the amazing work (and amazing volunteers DOING the work!) that’s going on around the UK, with you, along the way.
We will continue to plant a tree for every box of bumboo purchased, through our partnership with Eden Reforestation Projects, hence our revised mantra for November: Buy One. Plant One. Help Someone.
We invite you to make your toilet roll work harder with us this month, and as always we thank you for your continued support 🙏
