rewild your garden: create a wildlife corridor

Alex (Head Gardener and wildlife advocate) shares his tips on how to create a wildlife corridor.

A wildlife corridor is essentially connecting A to B in a wildlife friendly way. This could be as simple as creating a little gap in your fence that allows wildlife to pass between gardens. Or if you want to take it a step further, add in native hedging which provides food and shelter! If all our gardens were connected in this way, it would give wildlife a far larger area to forage, live and expand the gene pool.

  1. Hedgehog Highways: Who doesn't love a hedgehog? They're not just adorable; they're also nature's own gardeners, munching away on pesky slugs and bugs without us needing to use any chemicals. These spiky friends love a good night-time wander, often travelling over a mile! But fences and walls can block their path. You could try removing obstacles that may get in the way of hedgehogs passing from garden to garden, or collaborate with a neighbour to create hedgehog-sized holes in your fences.

  2. Wall Makeover with Climbers: Adding climbers to your wall or fence can make them look beautiful and be a hero for wildlife at the same time! Plant some beautiful climbers like ivy or honeysuckle. They'll not only transform dull walls but also offer a food source and a snuggly home for birds and bugs. Plus, they link up different spots for our tiny friends to explore.

  3. Grow a Hedge, Host a Haven: Hedges are like bustling hotels for wildlife, packed with fruit, shelter, and perfect spots for nests. And they're safe paths for our little critters to hop, scurry, and flutter from one place to another.
